Pretty as a Picture

So I have this cool app on my iPhone called, appropriately, Palettes, that lets you take a photo and turn it into a color palette. Because you know how you read a magazine and (I’ve been guilty of this, I’m sure) it’s like, “get your inspiration from nature,” and you’re like, um… so my apartment should look like a blade of grass? The reason this app is so awesome is that it sees all those colors that you don’t even notice—so when I took this snap of the Statue of Liberty on a boat ride over the weekend, it caught all those greys and peaches and dusty blues that I might have overlooked. Neat, huh? (-Moe)

Color Me Neutral

SwatchofWeek

If you’re anything like me and makeover your home on a yearly basis (ok, bi-yearly…at least) it’s best to purchase neutral furnishings that can take on a whole new look via easy accents and a new coat of wall paint. But sometimes I just can’t help myself when I spot a punchy patterned item like this arm chair. But don’t let pieces like this scare you off–this beauty can work in a variety of settings. When you’re ready for a living room makeover, move the chair into your dining room at the head of the table, or in your bedroom to create a reading nook and give those rooms a whole new look. Neutral need not be boring–or stagnant! (-Allie)

Fresh Greens

swatchThis week’s Swatchbook was inspired by this pretty fabric from Thibaut that I’ve had sitting in my apartment waiting for me to make pillows out of it. I love that yellow-green can be a great his-and-her color – it’s pretty, but not feminine, and not too trendy or weird to turn off style-averse dudes. I like the idea of layering it with creamy neutrals and wood for a nice, soothing room. (-Moe)

Stars & Stripes Forever

In honor of the Fourth of July, I couldn’t resist making this week’s Swatchbook a patriotic red, white & blue. And what’s not to love for your home?  Blue and white are an easy, crisp combo, and that punch of red livens everything up. (-Moe)

Splash of Orange

My favorite color combo right now: Aqua and orange. There’s something so refreshing about that cool shade of blue pumped up with a citrus-y accent. ICI Paints included several different combinations in their palettes for 2009/2010.  You can get many looks with the pairing: sea mist plus coral is sweet; robin’s egg and coral are a little bolder; and teal and russet take on a retro-ethnic feel.
